Sapphire Dragon Orchids Photo Gallery ...last updated 11.03.2007

We hope you enjoy photos of some our favorite orchids. Some of these photos are of our 20+ coerulea phalaenopsis breeding stock of select species and hybrids. Over the next few years we will be releasing hybrids using many of these orchids. We will continue to post more photos as are available.

Please do not copy or distribute any of our photos without prior written consent from us. You absolutely do NOT have permission to use these images on eBay or other online media unless we have specifically given you permission to use a specific photo. Unfortunately we have to protect our intellectual property rights and have seen unscrupulous sellers use our photos to misrepresent their own items. As an eBay vendor, we are regularly online and take infringement seriously as does eBay. We really hate having to file official complaints through eBay. Please just do the right thing and don't use our photo's without our permission.

On the flip side, if you are doing an orchid society presentation or are interested in our photos for commercial use, please contact us directly. We are happy to work with you.

xxxxxx Phalaenopsis violacea "Abies"- added 10/9/07

Another lovely indigo blue violacea just bloomed out. The petals on this one are nice and clean, no green tips. Generally flat flower compared to the others. This one may turn out to be really nice. We'll see next year when the plant is more mature. Meanwhile I'll still be using this one for breeding this year. It's very exciting to have 3 indigo violaceas now!

xxxxxx Phalaenopsis violacea 'Dainiji Aiiro' - added 6/24/07

Our newest Norton line indigo violacea 'Dainiji Aiiro'. This is another plant from the cross of ('Krull's Navy Blue' AM/AOS x 'Crystelle' HCC/AOS) purchased from Krull-Smith.

Its probably a little up for debate if this is really a coerulea phal. But it's close enough and I figured we could join in the club that has attempted to breed with it and came out with some lovely pinks!

xxxxxx Phalaenopsis violacea 'Sapphire's Navy' - updated 7/14/07

This amazing coerulea violacea comes from the Norton line a violaceas that have been line breed by H.P. Norton. This plant comes from the cross of ('Krull's Navy Blue' AM/AOS x 'Crystelle' HCC/AOS) purchased from Krull-Smith.

This is a comparison image of 'Joy's Blue' and 'Sapphire's Navy' taken side by side to illustrate the huge different between the standard coerulea violacea and the new violaceas originating form the Ooi line. (The flower wasn't open all the way when I took this photo.)

xxxxxx Phalaenopsis violacea 'Ruby Dragon' - added 12/11/06

This is the second violacea to bloom from the cross of ('Krull's Navy Blue' AM/AOS x 'Crystelle' HCC/AOS) purchased from Krull-Smith. The color is a very nice rich magenta that is much darker than 'Crystelle'.

xxxxxx Phalaenopsis violacea var coerulea x sib
I believe both of these violaceas come from the gene line. They are from the same grower. The very flat flower on the left is was listed as a sib cross and was very small when I purchased it several years ago. The other was purchased at the same time as a blooming size confirmed coerulea.

P. violacea 'SDO Violet'

This violacea is a little darker, but the flower shape is very poor with the recurved petals. This plant is also a very poor grower.

xxxxxx Phalaenopsis equestris var cyanochilus 'Martel's Blue'

The "blue" in the lip of var cyanochilus is very very pale. It should still be usefull for creating coerulea versions of foundation hybrids like Purple Gem. I now have 3 different cyanos in my collection and have started doing some line breeding to try to create one with a more intensely colored lip. This was photo was taken in the winter and the yellow coloration in the lip is much more intense.

xxxxxx Doritis pulcherrima var coerulea x sib.

Dts. pulcherrima 'Indigo Dragon'
This is currently my best pulcherrima coerulea as there is almost no orange pigment on the lip.
Dts. pulcherrima 'Indigo Dragon'

xxxxxx Doritis pulcherrima var coerulea x sib.

Dts. pulcherrima 'Violet Dragon'
This is the darkest pulcherimma coerulea in my collection. The lip does have a little bit of orange.
  Dts. pulcherrima 'Flame'
This is an example where the lip has a very strong orange pigment on the side lobe of the lip. This is a nice flower, but probably won't be used for breeding due to the lip color.

xxxxxx Doritis pulcherrima var coerulea 'Little Blue' - added 12/11/06

This is another nice pulcherrima with a rather nice lip. I'm currently trying to use this one in my breeding program because of it's clear color and compact size.

xxxxxx Dtps. Siam Treasure 'Blue' (P. lowii x Dts. pulcherimma v coerulea)

These are amazing when a mature plant is in full bloom.

xxxxxx Dtps. Kenneth Schubert (P. violacea v coerulea x Dts. pulcherimma v coerulea)

Dtps. Kenneth Schubert 'Blue' ..

This clone is widely available and is probably the darkest one I have seen. Unfortunately so far it does not breed.

Dtps. Purple Martin 'KS' (Dtps. Kenneth Schubert x P. violacea var coerulea)

xxxxxx

This clone of Purple Martin is the most intensely colored blue phal in my collection. Can't wait to see the progeny of this flower in future hybrids.

xxxxxx Dtps. Fire Cracker 'Blue Martini' (Dtps. Red Coral x Dts. pulcherimma v coerulea)

This clone is almost as dark as Dtps. Purple Martin 'KS'. I'm very interested to see how this one breeds in the future.

xxxxxx Dtps. (P. Timothy Christopher x Dts. pulcherimma v coerulea)

This cross is an excellent example of a first generation coerulea cross. The lip is a lavender pink. There will probably be a increasing number of crosses like this in the next few years. Crosses like this will be a useful foundation for future blue breeding.
